About This Course
Financial Accounting is designed to develop student’s knowledge and skills to manage the financial affairs of individuals, communities and businesses. This course provides a basic knowledge of accounting to the students, which is a prime requirement for any business graduate in today’s context. It intends to provide an understanding of the four key financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, statement of shareholder’s equity and statement of cash flows) used in businesses and how they are prepared by using Financial Reporting Standards. In addition to providing an introduction to financial reporting, this course will also be a foundation for those who may later wish to specialize in accounting.
Learning Objectives

Understand the accounting environment and users of accounting information
2.
Show an ability to apply accounting vocabulary, principles and concepts.
3.
Differentiate between cash and accrual basis of accounting.
4.
Analyze transactions and prepare journals, ledgers, trial balance and worksheet for service and merchandising business.
5.
Accurately prepare an organization’s final accounts for a specific period, otherwise known as financial statements (Income Statement, Owner’s Equity Statement, Cash flow Statement and Balance Sheet).
Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1.
Explain and recognize elements of financial statements and record transactions using accounting standards.
2.
Develop an understanding of the accounting cycle of service and merchandising business, which includes identifying transactions, journalizing, posting to ledger, preparing trial balances, adjusting entries, adjusted trial balance, preparation of financial statements, closing entries and post-closing trial balance.
3.
Identify the major characteristics of a corporation, differentiate between paid in capital and retained earnings and record issuance of common and preferred stock.
4.
Understand and analyze the contents of the corporate financial reports.
5.
Communicate accounting information accurately and confidently.

Samina Haque is a Senior Lecturer at BRAC Business School, BRAC University. She joined BRAC Business School in 2010. Samina has been teaching core finance courses that include International Finance, Financial Institutions, Securities Analysis and Portfolio Management, Financial Management and Introduction to Business. Samina brings with her considerable experiences in both corporate and development sectors. Prior to joining BRAC Business School, Samina worked for Emerging Markets Group, USA as NGO Sustainability Specialist in its NGO Service Delivery Program (NSDP) – a project funded by USAID. She also worked in Citibank N.A. and Standard Chartered Bank as Management Associate and Credit Analyst respectively. She is trained on Core Banking and Risk Analytics.

Md. Shezanur Rahman joined BRAC Business School as a “Lecturer” in September, 2018. Before joining Brac University, He worked as a Management Trainee Officer at a reputed financial institution of the country for a year. Mr. Rahman has completed his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka where he was the valedictorian of his batch. He also completed his Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA) from the Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka. His areas of interest includes Corporate Finance, Islamic Finance and Behavioral Finance.

Imtiaz Alam Nayeem graduated from New York Institute of Technology, USA with a degree in Masters in Business Administration in 2014. He also obtained his Undergraduate degree in Accounting and Economics from Queens College, CUNY, USA in 2011. He worked as a Junior PMO Analyst at JP Morgan Chase in 2011. In this position he worked directly with Program Management Office (PMO) to review and finalize architectural designs of different projects for PCWS (Bear Sterns Merger &Acquisition with J.P. Morgan Chase.). He has also worked in different companies such as Baralan USA, Town Sports International as an Accountant. Furthermore he has worked in a Commercial Bank in Bangladesh under their International Division. This position was responsible for preparing monthly report for submitting to Bangladesh Bank.
