ECO502: Macroeconomics deals with the aspects which have economy wide implications and impacts. The issues dealt have direct bearing on business activities. Macroeconomics analyzes the economic aggregates such as national income, unemployment, investment, inflation, foreign exchange and major economic policies. The focus of macroeconomics is to analyze the aspects which have economy wide implications and impacts. Modern macroeconomic analyses started with the advent of Great Depression of 1930s. The recent covid-19 pandemic has resulted in multifaceted impacts on the national economy and the world economy. The course will focus on standard and contemporary macroeconomic issues with special reference to business and related activities of Bangladesh.

About This Course

The purpose of this course is to train the students to think systematically about the current state of the economy and macroeconomic policy and to be able to evaluate the economic environment within which business and financial decisions are made. The course emphasizes the use of economic theory to understand and forecast the workings of financial markets and the operation and impact of government policies. Specifically, the course studies the determinants of the level of national income, employment, investment, interest rates, the supply of money, inflation, exchange rates, and the formulation and operation of stabilization policies.

Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed

Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed is a Professor, BRAC Business School (BBS), BRAC University since January 2014. Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed joined as the Governor of the Bangladesh Bank (Central Bank) on 02 May, 2005 and completed his four-year tenure on 30 April 2009. He obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from McMaster University, Canada in 1978. He started his career with a short period in the planning Department of the Government of East Pakistan and then joined as a teacher in Economics at Dhaka University and joined the civil service of the government in the erstwhile Civil Service of Pakistan (CSP) cadre. He has authored more than 80 books, reports and journal articles which have been published at home and abroad. From January 2010, to 18 January 2014 he was Professor, School of Business, North South University, and Dhaka, Bangladesh.
