About This Course

The course has been designed including topics of basic concepts of chemistry. Starting from the concept of biomolecules and biopolymers properties and functions of the major and minor essential elements, water, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins will be discussed thoroughly. Molecular architecture of microbial cells describing chemical composition and function of cellular structures like capsule, flagella, pilli, cell-wall, cytoplasmic membrane and organelles like pigments, ribosome, mitochondria, cytoplasmic inclusions and endospore will be outlined. Different types of Antimicrobial agents and their mode of action will be discussed. A closer look will be given on antimicrobial resistance and effectiveness of antimicrobial agents. Study of penicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, nyastatin, gentamicin and griseofulvin will be emphasized separately and assay of antibiotics by chemical methods will be outlined. .
