About the Course

Welcome to the Pharmaceutical Marketing (PHR 305) course in Summer 2020 semester. This course is one of the required core courses for the successful completion of the B.Pharm. (Hons.) program at the Department of Pharmacy, Brac University.

Summary Description

Pharmaceutical marketing is a business approach to better manage products through the understanding and study of the product's behavior in the market and the revenue associated throughout its commercial life from its introduction into the market. The focus of this course is on products and its current environment that drives the value in product marketing. It integrates the fundamentals of marketing education with general coursework in basic and applied pharmaceutical sciences. The course aims to provide an understanding of the marketing of products and the key challenges associated with it.

No prior knowledge or experience is required. The course has been designed with theory and activities to put learning into action. All that is required from students is curiosity about the idea of being a good marketer, and the willingness to share their thoughts and ideas with fellow learners on this platform.

Specific Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, a student will be able to:

  • examine the role that marketing plays in individual local and global firms, as well as in society as a whole
  • understand and analyze a company's portfolio
  • evaluate and design the marketing plan of a product
  • design and appraise different market-driven strategies for a product, as well as for product promotion
  • evaluate communication strategies for new and mature products
  • understand the different policies and regulations pertaining to pharmaceutical marketing

General Course Requirements

  • Lectures will be given on all the topics of the course with detailed explanation of all the contents of the topics using short videos on the buX platform.
  • There will be short ungraded quizzes during each lesson to make the course interactive and also to determine the ability of students to grasp the key points of each topic.
  • Case studies will be given throughout the semester where students will be expected to diagnose particular sets of problems. The various case studies will increase the level of critical thinking and power of analysis upon application of different marketing principles and strategies and development of marketing models that will range from a simple to a complex one.
  • Discussion sessions will be held once a week. Topics for the discussion session will be announced beforehand. Students are encouraged to attend these discussion sessions. The purpose of these sessions is for students to share ideas and opinions on the topics, and to resolve any confusion.
  • Assignments will be assigned for each chapter to assess the student’s level of understanding. No assignments will be accepted after the due date.
  • Graded quizzes will be taken for each chapter.
  • Each student in this course is expected to abide by the Brac University Code of Academic Integrity. Any work submitted by a student in this course for academic credit is expected to be the student's own work. Students are advised to refer to the plagiarism policy available on the university webpage.
  • When students communicate via email, they are requested to include their name, student ID, academic year, course code and a proper subject title.
